Sea and mountains are found together in the north area of Sardinia stretching from the town of
Alghero to
Olbia.
HOTEL North Sardinia An enchanting frame combining white beaches bordered by thick Mediterranean vegetation, such as those of the
Costa Smeralda,
Stintino or
San Teodoro, with pink granite rocks highlands.
The bustling east coast stretches along in a series of small fiords and islets forming the Arcipelago de
La Maddalena, a place with remarkable naturalistic and marine conditions whose environmental importance has not been affected by the human presence over the centuries. Within
La Maddalena is also the island of
Caprera, the last exile place of Giuseppe Garibaldi on which his tomb is found. Another important National Park is that of Asinara, home to some rare animals, including a population of wild albino donkeys from which the island takes its name. The Asinara island lies in the west stretch of the homonymous gulf, at less than three km from the mainland Sardinia and has been banned to human settlements after being declared a quarantine area and high security prison island in 1885, two events which forbade entry to the island until a decade ago when it became a National Park.
North Sardinia is home of the renowned
Costa Smeralda, which owes its name to the deep green shades of its pristine sea water; holiday paradise for many in the world, with a strong tourist vocation, it offers top quality accommodation and entertainment services. Within its sparkling atmosphere, small towns and villages may surprise with past time traditions and customs, their culinary delicacies and archaeological sites and monuments.
North Sardinia offers numerous discovery opportunities, many of which related to craftsmanship and food: the baskets of Anglona (whose highest expression can be found in the weaving museum of
Castelsardo), the embroideries of Villanova, the Vermentino wines of Meilogu and the olive oil of
Sassari are some examples. Extremely evocative are the archaeological sites of Tempio di Monte d'Accoddi in
Sassari or the nuraghe Santo Antine in
Torralba as well as the religious monuments of Santa Trinità di Saccargia in
Codrongianos or the Retablo Maggiore in
Ardara.
Moving about in Sardinia is safe and roads are not congested, however public transports are not at hand.
