Hotels in top rated Sardinia destinations
South Sardinia is administratively represented by the three provinces of
Cagliari, Carbonia-Iglesias and Medio Campidano.
HOTEL South Sardinia Nearly half of the population of
South Sardinia is concentrated in the area of
Cagliari so that the rest of the territory is poorly inhabited with positive consequences on the environment and the beauty of the landscape. Also, in
Cagliari you'll find the only seaport and airport of the area.
The coast is characterized by the long sandy beaches of
Villasimius and
Costa Rei in the east, Poetto and Santa Margherita in the south,
Porto Pino and
Costa Verde in the west. They often stretch along so many kilometres that they are crowded only for a few weeks throughout the year. Otherwise it is easy to find oneself among scattered groups of people with only the sound of waives in the background. In
South Sardinia, do not forget also the two satellite islands of San Pietro and
Sant'Antioco.
Typical of the south west area are the now dismissed mines of
Carbonia,
Fluminimaggiore,
Ingurtosu and many others. Offices, workers villages, power stations, hotels, railway stations, in two words entire villages are no longer inhabited and they are places of interest for what today is called 'industrial' archaeology. Traditional archaeology has also its point of interest in
South Sardinia.
HOTEL South Sardinia The sites of
Barumini and
Nora are the island's most representatives of the Nuragic and Roman periods.
Trekkers as well as mountain bike and 4WD lovers will find plenty of activities in the Natural Reserve of Sette Fratelli. Located in south east Sardinia, right behind the famous beaches of
Villasimius and
Costa Rei, it will offer you spectacular sceneries of canyons and naturally sculptured rocks formations. If you are into bird watching then the Natural Reserve of Molentargius lagoon will give you the chance of great pictures and videos. Easily accessible all year round and located between the cities of
Cagliari and
Quartu Sant'Elena it hosts several species of birds, the most famous of which are the pink flamingos.
Cagliari itself is a lively city, with many attractions and points of interest. If you visit it in May, don't miss the great parade of the festival of Sant'Efisio, while in summer you can enjoy the beaches of Poetto and Calamosca, right in the city. At any time of the year you will find plenty of places where to have a meal but there are a few typical and folkloristic trattoria where you will taste only local dishes and wines at reasonable prices. They are worth a try.
